My Favourite Things take you down the rabbit hole of the world within, until you are face to face with your very own self, looking it deep in the eye and recognizing, we are all the same. The Brooklyn quintet creates an organic textured sound structured with unexpected changes. What's more, the band features a hotbed of NY talent and dreamers.
My Favourite Things is a band from Brooklyn. They offer you a window into their dreamy world of hushed lullabies, warm whispers and enchanting melodies. Their songs sound like paper-cut distant villages, cloud mountains that brush up against the ether and evergreen forests punctuated with sly yellow eyes blinking out towards you between the hulking live oaks. The delicate compositions swoon and bathe the listener in an aural watercolor wash that evokes a picturebook of all the places you visited when daydreaming as a child and never thought you would return to.
The sound feels both deceptively light and open whilst being rich in detail and delight. Violins, cellos and accordions weave in and out of twinkling glockenspiels, steel drums and harps, accompanied by breezy ukuleles and intricate guitars.
Led by multi-instrumentalist Dorothea Tachler, My Favourite Things perform live as a four or five piece featuring prominent musicians plucked from the buoyant New York scene: Yusuke Yamamoto on vibraphone and synths, Yoshio "Tony" Kobayashi on drums, Michael Figgiani on bass, Daru Oda on vocals and multiple instruments, as well as other musicians from time to time.
The band are firm favorites on the unforgiving NYC circuit, having played venues like Mercury Lounge, Union Pool, the Gutter, Zebulon, Public Assembly, Cameo, Cakeshop, The Living Room, Bruar Falls, Pianos, Lit Lounge etc, transporting transfixed audiences from their chaotic built up urban environments to a twilight world of their favourite things.
WNYC writes September 2010:
My Favourite Things has the kind of sound that could rush into your dreams and send you off into one of those 'happy place' nostalgia-filled montages you see in films--but one that you're actually excited about. The Brooklyn quintet creates an organic sprawling sound structured within rich precision and detail. What's more, the band features a hotbed of NY talent. Singer, multi-instrumentalist Dorothea Tachler (formerly of Igloo) with Daru Oda on keys/vocals (formerly in Norah Jones' band), Michael Figgiani on bass/vocals (Exeter Popes), singer/songwriter Alastair Ottesen on guitar/vocals with Jeffrey Ryan on drums. On this track, "Summer of '91," Tachler breathes life back into meadows and bicycles from summers past via a whispering lullaby.
